Oh my due date for that isn’t for another three days… next!
Sound familiar? If so you are a lot like me and WAIT – dont’ save this post to read until later. You MUST do it now!
Here are just a few techniques that I have been using to keep me on track.
- Seek Accountability. If you have a deadline then tell a friend or family member and ask them to serve as an accountability partner. Tell them what you need to get done and when it must be done by. Give them permission to stalk you until it is done.
- Think Small. If you have a big project to do then take the time now to break it down into little jobs. They are much less daunting and achievable. Use a 15 minute block a day and just do as much as you can.
- Learn to delegate. If you aren’t the only one who can perform the task then enlist help. Oh, and get over the need for perfection. If you wait until you have the time to do it yourself and do it perfectly (because we know that no one will do it as well as you) then you will be waiting a long time. At least if someone else helps then it will get done now and you may even be surprised to see that they did a pretty good job!
- Use bribery. We really are goal oriented people and will work hard to reach a goal. With that in mind you can use little things as a reward for completion of certain things. For example, reward yourself with a bubble bath just as soon as you are done.
- Make the decision now. Remember that we learned a while back that piles were simply unmade decisions. If you decide now what to do with certain things then they won’t add up for a big job later. If you spill milk in the fridge then clean it now and then when you do have to do a fridge cleaning it won’t be that big of a job.
